sachin tendulkar
sachin tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar can unquestionably be called the 'face of modern cricket'. He follows Don Bradman and Viv Richards as his generation's most successful batsman. The only close competitors Tendulkar faced were Brian Lara and, in more recent times, Ricky Ponting. Statistically, while Bradman scaled unreachable heights, Tendulkar, by his sheer consistency in longevity, marked his area with expansive width that shall, like the Australian great, probably never be conquered.

By the turn of the century, watching Tendulkar as India's lone warrior staging single-handed fights, - while carrying the hopes of a billion hearts, - was cricket's grandest spectacle. Too often his achievements would be let down by lack of support from teammates. Yet, his ability to continue to live to fight another day, shoulder blame unfairly and always delve into positives, transcends Tendulkar beyond a cricketing icon to a role model and a prized treasure for the oft-tarnished image of the sport. By the end of it all, through each seemingly-effortless, technically-perfect shot, that made batting an art form rather than a laborious effort, Tendulkar went on to be the game's leading run-getter, half-centurion and centurion in the two most pre-dominant forms of the game.

It is paradoxical that at the start of all these achievements was performance of nothingness - a debut ODI duck and an unflattering debut Test 15 against Pakistan as a 16-year-old. It underlines the old adage of attitude over talent, reminding everyone that even legends have to struggle to find their feet. He did make it big, of course, one small step at a time. First replacing Sanjay Manjrekar as India's most formidable batsman of the time and then becoming the only contender to Sunil Gavaskar's stature in Indian batting history. Finally, even the great Don Bradman drew parallels between himself and Tendulkar. In between, captaincy called on a few occasions, but it was one thing he wasn't cut out for. The "Little master" was also one of the very few who came out with his head held high as always, following the match-fixing scandal.

Following the turn of the century came India's ascendency after disappointing pasts during Tendulkar's foray in the peak of his career. He was now provided with the long-awaited support crew. But he still remained the mainstay while guiding his nation towards the summit of Test rankings. If Bradman started high and ended low, Tendulkar started low to rise unfathomably even miles before his end.

Tendulkar's long-awaited dream was finally fulfilled when he, as part of Team India, emerged victorious in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Throughout the tournament, he was a consistent performer with the bat. In an enormous acknowledgment to his batting genius, his teammates paid the Master Blaster rich tributes for his service to Indian cricket. Post-victory, Virat Kohli perfectly summed up the sentiment of many when he famously said that it was time that they carried Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders after he had carried the burden of the nation's expectations for 21 years. This World Cup win was the most special moment of Tendulkar’s life.

In the late 90s and during Greg Chappell’s coaching era, when heads were tumbling through the Indian team’s turmoil, it seems all that MS Dhoni did was chalked out a plan on how things would change for better. When granted the opportunity to lead, he showed himself ready and became the solution to most of India's problems, enough to finally fulfill expectations of a long-suffering crowd of supporters.

An Adam Gilchrist-inspired Mahendra Singh Dhoni was drafted in 2004 to solve India's wicketkeeper-batsman crisis following the failure of the Dravid experiment. His start was anything but legendary - getting out for a duck. It was his fifth outing when at home against Pakistan in 2005, that a blistering 148 which set up India for a win, made everyone take notice. It came after India had lost opener Tendulkar early and it was a performance which both calmed nerves and steered the ship - two qualities which would be Dhoni's hallmark in years to come. A mammoth 183 to chase a high Lankan total later in the year reiterated his value. By the end of 2005, Dhoni donned the all-whites to earn a maiden Test cap against Sri Lanka, holding both ODI and Test spots ever since. After India's failure in the 2007 World Cup, Rahul Dravid resigned as captain. In the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 that followed, Dhoni was chosen to lead a young Indian side. Under his guidance, the team quickly turned disappointment to joy by lifting the coveted trophy, to the surprise of both fans and detractors. His ability to excel in leadership was quickly recognized and within a year, he was appointed Indian skipper in all forms of the game.

Under Dhoni's captaincy, India posted successful Test series victories home and away against England (2008), New Zealand (2009) and Sri Lanka (2009). Throughout his first five years as a Test player, India had lost only two away series, a record which helped them top the Test rankings. Under his leadership, a renewed spirit emerged among players with youngsters Raina, Yuvraj, Sehwag and Gambhir showcasing fearless determination that had been missing since the 80s.

The biggest accomplishment of his career came in 2011 when he powered Team India to a remarkable World Cup victory with his extraordinary leadership skills that proved his worth as a successful captain. It was after a long gap that India won the Cup, thanks to a bunch of hardworking and enthusiastic cricketers led by a young and exceptionally astute skipper. He played a captain’s innings in the final against Sri Lanka, where his brilliant knock of 91 runs sealed the most memorable victory for his team and his country. He may have won the Man of the Match award in that ultimate encounter, but for a cricket-crazy nation, MS Dhoni will forever be the man who led from the front and fulfilled a billion dreams of seeing the Cup return after 28 long years.

Fast Facts

  • MS Dhoni was the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009.
  • He led India to victory in the inaugral ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 and ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.
  • Under the leadership of Dhoni, as of April 2011, India is yet to lose a Test series.
  • He is one of only 3 Indian skippers to notch above 10 wins in Tests.
  • Became the first wicket-keeper to have ever led India in Tests.
  • He's the third most successful (highest run getter) wicketkeeper batsman in ODIs, behind Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara.
  • Dhoni represented his district and club for badminton and football and was a goalkeeper.
  • His football coach sent him to play cricket for a local cricket club where he impressed with the gloves.

India must learn to live without Zaheer: Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly feels India need to regroup quickly to give England a taste of their own medicine in the home series.
LONDON: India have had a disastrous tour and ex-skipper Sourav Ganguly feels MS Dhoni's men need to regroup quickly to give England a taste of their own medicine in the home series.

Excerpts from an exclusive interview:

What do you feel went wrong with the team in England?

India didn't bat well in the Tests. We started off on a bad note by losing the opening match. After the Test whitewash, it was difficult to come back in the ODIs. England did play better cricket, but their real test will come in the subcontinent. However, I wouldn't like to take away credit for their performance at home.

If you were captain today, would you have done anything differently?

I've always believed that a captain is as good as his team. You can't blame the captain if some of the top players are out with injury. Look what happened to Australia when some of their top players dropped out. Before that, Ricky Ponting was considered the best captain in the world, when the Australians were ruling the roost with top bowlers like Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.

Which young Indian player has impressed you the most?

Ajinkya Rahane, to some extent. But even he failed to make full use of the initial starts he got. The Indian team looked ordinary. Basically, they must learn to live without Zaheer.

Your aggressive captaincy has often been cited as a reason for India's success in recent years. Are we lacking that approach now?

I captained the side a long time ago. A lot of changes have taken place since then. This is a different era, a different phase, but the team is still focussed on winning matches. Any team that can win matches in Australia, South Africa and England has to be good.

Is coach Duncan Fletcher doing enough?

It's early days yet for him. One can't comment on his performance just yet. Give him some time. I'm sure he'll do well.

Can England overtake India in the shorter version of the game too?

England are not the best ODI team. India have lost badly to them but their stars will rise again. Fitness is a key issue with this team and I'm sure the BCCI is going to address the issue. We also need good bowlers in all forms of the game to be consistent at the highest level. The selectors should have the eye for new talent.

Your contemporaries like Dravid and Tendulkar are still playing...

I'm 39. How long could I continue playing? I had my fill and am happily retired from international cricket.

Will you be playing in the IPL?

Yes. The passion to play is still there. IPL is a domestic league and I still have a couple of years of cricket left in me. Next year, I'll be ready for the tournament and will also play domestic cricket to get in shape before that.

Are you looking at a player-cum-coach role at Pune Warriors?

I haven't been told anything so far.

Are we going to see Sourav Ganguly the TV commentator on regular basis?

No. After spending so much time away from home during my playing days, I'm not keen to do regular commentary in every series.

Do you have ambitions of becoming a full-fledged cricket administrator?

I haven't given it a thought. But I'll try and help the game, and young cricketers, to the best of my ability.

Dravid's ODI run nears finish line

Rahul Dravid is the seventh-highest scorer in the all-time ODI list.
CARDIFF: All eyes will be on India's Rahul Dravid when he takes the field for the last time in coloured clothing at the Sophia Gardens stadium on Friday.

The fifth ODI will bring an end to Dravid's one-day adventures and given his mammoth exploits in Test matches, it is easy to forget that he is also the seventh-highest scorer in the all-time ODI list.

It's bound to be an emotional moment for India's Mr Dependable, since he hasn't been a regular in the one-day scheme of things since 2007. Having led India to a disastrous World Cup campaign that year, he was dumped unceremoniously, and Dravid turned his attentions to Test cricket.

Sometimes, though, his services in the shorter format have been required, mostly when India's young guns have been found wanting on lively pitches away from home, like in this series and during the 2009 Champions Trophy.

Earlier, too, he made several comebacks in the 50-over game, and for a while even unwillingly agreed to keep wickets under Sourav Ganguly's captaincy so India could play seven batsmen.

Under MS Dhoni, India sought fresh legs and a younger bunch of batsmen held centrestage, pushing Dravid out of the scheme of things when India played at home. A brilliant display of batsmanship in the Test series this summer in England, though, made it hard for selectors to leave him out, and it's ironic that he made his T20 International debut and retirement in the same game!

The lead-up to his last game has been distinctly low-key. In fact, England spinner Graeme Swann, a keen Dravid fan, didn't even know Dravid would be playing his last ODI.

When TOI asked Swann for his reactions, he said: "He is going to play his last ODI? That is very good news for us. We don't have to bowl to him when we tour India. He has played exceptionally well this summer. Right from the first ball he faced at Lord's, he looked like the in-form player. He is a lovely timer of the ball and a joy to watch. It will be a big loss for India when he stops playing but bowlers around the world will be happy that he won't be playing ODIs any more."

There's a perception that Dravid got a raw deal in the 50-over format throughout his career, and Swann said: "India's batting talent, especially in sub-continental conditions, is astonishing and you can't complain about the team because they won the World Cup. I can't say why he wasn't picked for the World Cup team but I'm sure any other team would have. But anyway, everyone knows Dravid is a truly world-class player."

Naturally, Dravid's teammates are planning a grand farewell for him.
